Pune is the cultural capital of Maharashtra, with Peshwa-era heritage, famous Ganpati temples and good food. A local cab saves you the hassle of parking in the busy old city, and the driver can order the places so you avoid traffic and midday crowds.

Quick facts

  • Suggested duration: One day (8 to 10 hours)
  • Approx. local distance: About 60 to 90 km, more with Sinhagad
  • Best time to go: October to March; early mornings year-round
  • Ideal for: Visitors, families, business travellers with a free day and pilgrims

Places to cover

  • Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati: Visit early in the morning for a shorter queue; nearby Kasba Ganpati is the town's presiding deity.
  • Shaniwar Wada: The Peshwa seat of power, with its massive gates and gardens; the evening light and sound show runs on selected evenings.
  • Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum: A remarkable private collection of lamps, musical instruments and art, close to the old city.
  • Aga Khan Palace: Gandhi memorial and museum in a beautiful palace and garden.
  • Parvati Hill: A temple complex with a Peshwa-era museum and a city view; there are many steps.
  • Pataleshwar Cave Temple: A rock-cut 8th-century Shiva shrine in the middle of the city (FC Road area).
  • Osho Teerth Park (optional): A calm garden in Koregaon Park.
  • Sinhagad Fort (optional): About 30 km out of the city; adds 3 to 4 hours, best in the morning.
