Ladakh Travel Guide: Leh, Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley and Altitude Tips
Ladakh is a high-altitude desert of stark mountains, deep blue lakes and Buddhist monasteries. It is one of India's best road-trip and adventure destinations, but it needs careful planning.
Acclimatise first
Leh sits at about 3,500 metres. Rest for at least 24 to 48 hours after you arrive, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and do not rush to higher passes. Take altitude sickness seriously: if symptoms get worse, descend and get medical help.
Top places
- Leh town, Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa
- Nubra Valley and its sand dunes, reached over Khardung La
- Pangong Tso, the famous high-altitude lake
- Monasteries such as Thiksey and Hemis
Best time to visit
Roughly June to September, when the high roads are usually open. Winters are extremely cold and many routes close.
Permits and rules
Some areas need permits, and the rules change from time to time. Check the current requirements with the local administration or your tour operator before you travel.
How to reach
Fly into Leh (Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport), or drive from Manali or Srinagar in the open season. If you fly in, you gain altitude very quickly, so rest well on day one.
What to pack
Warm layers, sunscreen, sunglasses, a power bank and some cash. Mobile networks can be patchy, so download maps and bookings in advance.
